How Not to Get Ripped Off When Outsourcing Workers

June 8th, 2009 |

Working with freelancers can make your life a lot easier, if you find good ones. It can also be incredibly frustrating if you come across unscrupulous ones that are more interesting in stealing your money then actually finishing any work for you. Below, are some tips to help you avoid getting ripped off by outsourced workers.

a. Don’t Pay Upfront: Whatever you do, don’t get duped into paying for work before it is finished. I know most freelancers will want a deposit upfront. This is to protect them selves. They don’t want to get stuck with 50 articles about Sperm Whales that they can’t do anything with because they have gotten stiffed, so their position is understandable. However, at the same time, buyers don’t want to pay for work that they never receive. Thankfully for buyers, the freelance market is very competitive and you will find individuals that will be willing to work for no upfront deposit. To put their mind at ease, agree to pay them for half of the work after it is completed and the rest after the project is finished. This keeps them motivated and at ease that they are not going to get cheated.

b. Work With People You Have Built a Trusting Relationship With: Once you have found good freelancers, don’t let them go. If they have proven trustworthy and provide good work, make sure that you keep their contact information, even if you don’t have an imminent project. The saying is true, “It is hard to find good help.”

c. Try to Get References: If you are beginning work with a new freelancer, try to get some references. Sure, people can fake these, but it is still worth the effort. Ask for a list of contact information of people that they have worked with in the past.

d. Don’t Leave Feedback Until You Have Received Satisfactory Work: If you are looking for freelancers at internet marketing forums or at freelance websites, don’t leave positive feedback until all changes have been made and you have received the final project. If you leave feedback prematurely, you may never hear from the freelancer again, unless of course they are honest and serious about their online service business. While this is true of many people, don’t count on it. Protect yourself.
